to the Middle East at the School of Oriental and African Studies,
University of London; and author of Political Life in Cairo's New
Quarters: Encountering the Everyday State.

analysis of the struggle for freedom in Syria, including historical
background, current situation, and solidarity efforts in Canada.

2a) 2:00 – 3:30 pm "It's Not About A State": The UN Bid for Palestinian Statehood
A critical analysis of the Palestinian bid for statehood at the UN, focusing on the larger contextual issues of refugee rights.
2b) 2:00 – 3:30pm Linking Our Struggles: Resisting Austerity in Montreal
Making the links between struggles against austerity here in Montreal and those in the Arab world.

Atelier Tadamon! L’intifada arabe et l’impérialisme
Réflexions sur les révolutions dans le “monde arabe”
Depuis
l’automne 2010, des soulèvements populaires ont eu lieu en Afrique du
Nord et au “Moyen-Orient ”, en défiant les régimes autoritaires et en
renversant parfois des dirigeants de longue date.
Des mouvements au Maroc, en Tunisie, en Lybie, en
Égypte, au Yémen, au Bahrein, en Iran, en Irak et en Syrie ce sont
mobilisés sous différentes formes contre les mesures d’austérité, les
gouvernements autoritaires et l’impérialisme.
En Amérique du Nord, les médias occidentaux et les
universitaires ont tenté de comprendre les causes et les effets de ces
soulèvements et de se pencher sur les implications de ces changements.
Nous vous invitons à vous joindre à nous pour un teach in
de deux jours où nous examinerons les soulèvements au « Moyen-Orient »
et en Afrique du Nord avec un point de vue critique. Il s’agira
également d’une opportunité d’apprendre comment vous pouvez vous
impliquer et supporter ces mouvements populaires.
