Depuis des dizaines d'années, les changements climatiques font consensus au sein de la communauté des scientifiques du climat. Ils existent, ils sont causés par l'homme, et ils menacent la vie sur Terre si nous n'y faisons rien.

Il est minuit moins quart. Si nous voulons éviter ces changements climatiques, nous devons transformer notre société et amorcer une transition vers une société libre de pétrole. Faire autrement serait carrément suicidaire.

Malheureusement, nos politiciens, de Couillard au Québec à Harper à Ottawa ainsi qu'une bonne partie de l'opposition, semblent ne pas se soucier de notre survie. Comment expliquer autrement qu'ils placent les intérêts des multinationales énergétiques avant ceux qui ont voté pour eux? En appuyant des projets d'oléoducs et autres projets de transport de pétrole qui permettront à l'exploitation des sables bitumineux de s'étendre, ainsi que d'autres projets dangereux comme le Plan Nord, nos soi-disant représentants vendent notre avenir.

Il s'agit d'un aspect d'un projet d'austérité exécuté à merveille par nos politiciens. Les inégalités croissent sans cesse, et notre capacité à résister aux changements climatiques s'affaiblit. Les partis politiques établis sacrifient notre santé, notre planète et l'avenir de l'humanité pour les profits à court terme de l'industrie, comme celle des énergies fossiles. Ses profits nous tuent. 

La science est simple: nous devons conserver 80% du pétrole dans le sol si nous voulons limiter le réchauffement climatique en bas de deux degrés, le seuil de la catastrophe annoncée par la communauté scientifique. Nous n'y arriverons pas si les sables bitumineux de l'Alberta continuent à s'étendre. Oui, le Canada est le point de départ de notre lutte pour l'avenir de la planète. 

La lutte au Northern Gateway de la C-B, et de Keystone XL aux États-Unis, font partie d'une stratégie d'endiguement de la part des militants. Si l'industrie des sables bitumineux ne rejoint pas son marché, elle ne peut s'étendre. Nous en sommes maintenant à la bataille de Québec.  

Le slogan du mouvement américain, celui-là même qui a mobilisé 400 000 personnes à New York plus tôt cet automne, est « pour tout changer, nous avons besoin de tout le monde ». Les activistes peuvent mener cette lutte, mais ils ne gagneront pas sans vous.

These pipelines will not pass

For decades a scientific consensus, shared by over 97% of climate scientists, has existed around climate change. It is real, it is man-made and it will extinguish life on earth as we know it if we continue to spew carbon into the atmosphere.

The implications are clear: we must transform our society, and shift away from fossil fuels, in order to avert catastrophic climate change. To do otherwise would be nothing short of suicidal.

Unfortunately our politicians, from Couillard in Quebec to Harper in Ottawa and most if not all of our opposition leaders, appear to have a societal death wish. How else to explain why they consistently place the interests of big oil companies ahead of the interests of the people who elected them? By backing pipeline expansion projects and other modes of fossil fuel transport that will allow for rapid expansion of the tar sands, and other destructive resource extraction projects like Plan Nord, our so-called leaders are selling out our future.

It's all part of the austerity agenda, which our politicians are executing to perfection. Social inequality is skyrocketing, and our ability to resist climate change is being gutted. The established political parties are sacrificing our health, our planet and the future of humanity for the short-sighted benefit of industries, such as the fossil fuel industry, whose business is killing us.

The science is simple: we must leave 80% of the oil in the soil if we are to have any chance of holding global warming below two degrees, the threshold beyond which scientists predict catastrophe. That cannot happen if the Alberta tar sands continue to expand, and that's why Canada is ground zero in the fight for the future of our planet.

Fierce resistance to Northern Gateway in B.C., and to Keystone XL in the U.S., has been part of an activist strategy of containment: if the tar sands cannot get its oil to market, it cannot expand. Now, that strategy of containment comes down to the battle of Quebec.

The slogan of the U.S. movement, one which put over 400,000 in the streets of New York earlier this fall, is "to change everything, we need everyone." That's why we need you. Activists can lead this fight, but they can't win it alone.

To do that, we need you to join us in building a movement more powerful than any pipeline. One which will lead us away from fossil fuels and towards an economy which respects the ecological limits of this planet.

The whole world is watching, and it is no exaggeration to say the fate of the planet rests in our hands.
