@ Centre St-Pierre, 1212 Panet, room 1205 (metro Beaudry)Speakers:Bernie Williams is one of the founders of Walk4Justice, a grassroots-organized annual Vancouver-based walk to raise awareness about missing and murdered indigenous women in Canada and to demand a public inquiry. In 2008, Walk4Justice participants walked all the way from Vancouver to Ottawa, and this year, they made it to Manitoba. Williams will talk about her experiences with the Walk4Justice and speak out against the apathy towards missing and murdered women from Vancouver's downtown eastside and the Highway of Tears.
Nakuset is the Executive Director at the Native Women's Shelter of Montreal. She will share her experiences about working at the shelter and how cuts to the Aboriginal Healing Foundation budget have undermined the social services provided to Indigenous women in the city.
Marylynn Poucachiche is from the Algonquin community of Barriere Lake, 5 hours north of Montreal. She has been at the forefront of her community's struggles for land and governance rights for many years. She will talk about her activism as well as having to deal with the realities of violence against women in her community.
Monday, October 4thMarch and Vigil @ 6 pmAnnual Sisters in Spirit (SIS) March and Vigil for missing and murdered Native women, with invited guests Bridget Tolley, Sue Martin, Bernie Williams, and many others.
@ Cabot Square, St-Catherine and Atwater (metro Atwater)The 5th annual SIS March & Vigil will take place in communities across the country, including Ottawa, Edmonton and Montreal. 2009 saw close to 75 SIS vigils occur across the country, with it's first ever occurence in Nicaragua as well. It is a national day of remembrance, respect, and demands for government action. Marchers will assemble at Cabot Square, and the march will proceed east down St. Catherine Street to Phillips Square (across the street from The Bay) for a candlelight Vigil.
