*POLITICAL PROFILING, THAT'S ENOUGH!*
*
*
*A regular session of the Montreal municipal council will take place at
city hall on November 24th.*
*Let's invite ourselves to loudly and clearly condemn the political
profiling which is more and more blatant in Montreal.
*
The municipal administration, like all governments is laughing in our
faces and has as little respect for the activists as they have for their
workers. While political profiling has always been present, since the
maple spring and even more since the heightening of the pressure tactics
of the municipal employees, Mayor Coderre, his predecessor and the SPVM
are blatantly and disgustingly demonstrating it. On the one hand, a
certain type of protesters gets beaten, pepper-sprayed, kettled,
mass-arrested and charged for daring to put a foot on the street. And on
the other hand, a different type of protesters does not give their
itinerary, puts on masks, starts fires on the street and trashes city
hall, and only a few scapegoats are punished for show and only many
weeks after the incident. If we take into account the discernment of
cops when enforcing laws and regulations around the repression of
protests and militant actions, there is clearly a double standard in
Montreal.
Despite our solidarity with workers fighting against bill 3, we are
ABSOLUTELY NOT in solidarity with policemen and policewomen who have
never shown any solidarity with us. The cops prefer putting in practice
their political role by severely repressing left militants (and theses
days pretty much anyone they find in their way at the wrong time). At
the same time, we wish to denounce the repressive attitude of union
bureaucrats and their goons, who also profile and wish to control us in
their gatherings as we have seen in the September 20th protest against
bill 3. On that day, the Industrial Workers of the world Union (IWW)
contingent, has been targeted with political profiling from both the
SPVM and the big union's security services. We support and encourage the
militant actions of union workers and we, of course, do not wish for any
repression whatever it may be but, the implied complicity of the cops
with the recent pressure tactics of municipal employees proves yet again
the existence of political profiling. This incident, far from being
isolated, recalls the importance of fighting against this form of
oppression systematically targeting groups who are mostly already
marginalized.
The Collective Opposed to Police Brutality (COPB), the Anti-Capitalist
convergence (CLAC), the Montreal section of the Industrial Workers of
the world (IWW) and the ASSÉ have decided to join forces! These four
collectives/organizations are constantly targeted with political
profiling during the events they organize. The march 15th protest
against police brutality and the May 1st anti-capitalist protest are
systematically repressed, sabotaged and for a few years now, practically
banned; ASSÉ's protests are able to take off but ends with excessive
brutality from the SPVM; and the union contingent of the IWW are closely
guarded by the nervous primates of the ''Urban brigade''.
